The Hindu month of Chaitra brings with it several festivities in various parts of India. While in the north people observe Navratras, and Chhath in the east, in Rajasthan they celebrate Gangaur to mark the beginning of a new calendar. True to the spirit of this princely state, the festival of Gangaur is celebrated here with much fanfare. The festival is dedicated to Gan and Gauri, or Shiva and Parvati as we know them. It is a symbol of conjugal and marital happiness. In Jaipur a large procession is taken out that commences from the Zanani- Deodhi (the part in which women live) of the City Palace, passing through Tripolia Bazaar, Chhoti Chaupar, Gangauri Bazar, Chaugan stadium and finally converging at the Talkatora. The procession presents a riot of colors with a pageantry of elephants, old palanquins, chariots, bullock carts, bands and performing folk artists.
