Who Traversed
the Line of Control

Not many have traveled along the Line of Control (LoC), the contentious border between India and Pakistan since 1948. Ranjan Kumar Singh is one of the few civilians to have taken on this challenging journey. Entering the sector in early 1999 to capture the essence of life in the disturbed land, little did he know that the Kargil War was imminent. During the journey, he spent many action-packed nights in army bunkers and witnessed cross-border shelling while facing the biting cold. His remarkable journey, from the Sangam post in the Akhnoor sector to Partapur (along the LAC) in Ladakh, culminated in an eight-episode series, Ek Duniya Sarhad Ki for Doordarshan, India’s official TV channel, and an award-winning book, Sarhad: Zero Mile. Besides, he also created a film, entitled The Wily Warriors, about the Naga Regiment, which is the only regular infantry regiment to have been raised after India’s independence.

Sarhad: Zero Mile

Sarhad Zero Mile (Hindi) is an eye-witness account of the life along the Line of Control, the issue of contention between India and Pakistan.  The book is first of its kind in Hindi as it highlights the velour of gallant soldiers, as well as the struggle of common men and women along the border. During his journey along the LoC, the author slept in bunkers, toiled with the soldiers, and braved the chill of the Himalayas to bring to light an authentic insight into the lives of the soldiers and the dwellers. The book has been awarded by the Ministry of Defence, Government of India.
